Tormented was staind’s first album, self-released in 1996. The album is about a depressed guy who eventually commits suicide, this can be hinted by the first lines “It’s been like this forever! No more! I hate my fucking life!” followed by the sound of a gun cocking before the first track “Tolerate”. This can also be hinted with the lyrics “Can’t you see, I fucking hate me!” over the lyrics “I PISS” in “Painful”, the lyrics are then repeated 4 times at the start of the track, then at the end “NAMELESS!” and “I fucking hate me!” are repeated over and over again, getting louder and more intense! This can also be hinted into the final lyrics of the song “4 walls” (Four walls) saying “Their’s nothing left for me!” followed by the sound of a gunshot, then 8 minutes and 2 seconds of silence before going into the hidden track “The funeral” which contains a Church organ, a few people coughing, and a preacher reading off the bible. After 11 minutes and 27 seconds of the track playing, the preacher’s voice becomes reversed and distorted as well as deeper and more demonic
Author Tommy Udo wrote: "Tormented is one long rush of hardcore brat-rage, a 900mph scream of a man smashing his head against a wall with frustration".
The album is well-known for it’s graphic art, which depicts a bloody Barbie doll on a crucifix with nails hanging from a plastic frame, a buried person with a rosary protruding from the person's nose, and a knife impaling a Bible. The album also depicts depression in the song “Mudshuvel” (renamed “Mudshovel after the 1999 album “Dysfunction”)
The lyrics on Tormented are inspired off of Lewis’s life events as a child saying “My life, up to a point was shit. But I've come a long way. I grew up in a trailer park in Vermont. That was the shit I got out of me in tormented, and dysfunction, and tailing into break the cycle. But the title ”Break the cycle” says it all." He also said “I’ve had a gun in my mouth, Just crying and wanting to do it, but not being able to for the thought of what it would do to the people I was going to leave behind. It took a hell of a lot more courage to not pull that trigger than it would have taken to pull it."
Fred Durst (lead singer for Limb Bizkit) helped staind produce albums but didn’t like what he saw in the artwork (which again depicts a bloody Barbie doll on a crucifix with nails hanging from a plastic frame, a buried person with a rosary protruding from the person's nose, and a knife impaling a Bible) but after hearing a 4 track demo, he changed his mind and helped staind get a record deal with flip records
Tormented got some mixed reviews, and only sold a few thousand copies (you can still buy them today just google “Staind tormented 1996 album” then go to shopping) Positive reviews were towards the heavyness and aggression of Tormented but negative reviews due to the lack of production!
